A Message From Vice Mayor O’Brien

Hiking is one of my favorite outdoor activities, but this time of year, I hit the trails less often. Skipping a hike-especially on days of extreme heat-is not only healthier for me, but it can be safer for our firefighters who respond to calls for help, no matter the temperature.

If your summer plans include hiking, please aim for early mornings or evenings when there’s more shade and wear proper shoes, clothing and sunscreen. Bring more water than you think you’ll need, along with a charged cell phone and another hiker.

if you’re going to be alone, be sure to tell someone where you’re heading and when you’ll be done. You can find more safety tips and a trail rating guide at the Phoenix Parks website.
